When it comes to Rock Stars and pioneers, few have traveled the dimensions and time warps as Dave Wyndorf and Monster Magnet. I mean is it pushing it to much to say what David Lee Roth is to Hard Rock, Dave Wyndorf is to Stoner Rock and he becomes more and more legendary with each album and show. With a brand new album “Last Patrol” released October 15th, 2013 via Napalm Records and North American tour, Portland’s Hawthorne theatre was ready for one of Stoner Rocks elite, Monster Magnet.
After blistering sets from heavy Rock openers Anti-Mortem and Royal Thunder, newly reformed Monster Magnet as a five piece battalion hit the stage with the psychedelic flair that the band has always been known for. Opening with “Nod Scene”, “Dopes To Infinity“, and “Twin Earth”, Wyndorf quickly answered the previous rumors of possible health issues and sent those thoughts completely up in smoke. Other gems such as “Look to the Orb”, “End of Time”, and “Spine of God” continued to elevate Portland’s near sold out Hawthorne Theatre to Monolithic realms of unity.
The band consisting of founder Dave Wyndorf, Garrett Sweeny, Phil Caivano, Bob Pantella, and Chris Kosnik hurled rhythmic riffs and screaming guitars utilizing the 3 axe assault to the fullest, although don’t forget Dave’s an entertainer and this provides cover for those moments as well. The band has gone through many lineup changes always remaining electric and some chemistry with the members seems to be in full effect here. Closing out the latter part of the set with favorites, “Crop Circle”, “Powertrip” and “Space Lord“ from the very successful and Gold selling 1998 release “Powertrip” couldn’t have been better.
The visual experience with trippy, dazzed space morphs flashing on the backwall screen along to the classic sonic, boom driven melodies complimented appropriately. After blazing “Powertrip” and taking a 5 min break with the crowd yelling for more, the band came back to close it out. “This next song is 11 minutes long so if you want to sit down and smoke a Bong hit, DO IT!!!” frontman Dave Wyndorf said before leading us into the title track off 2013 release “Last Patrol” and closing the night off wishing we we’re all on a weed farm with “Tractor“! Do yourself a favor and get out and see the new Monster Magnet tour and go get “Last Patrol“.
