One of the things we love to do here on the Urb Thrasher Flower Hour is to introduce and bring you various styles of music from all over the spectrum. Some stack higher than others and one of our favorite multidimensional, fluent, and cohesive units bridging mountain bluegrass with an aggressive metallic kick was in Portland Tuesday night – Jayke Orvis and the Broken Band. Starting a new year off with a new attitude, a new tour, and a new bass, Portland was more than happy to welcome Jayke Orvis and the Broken Band to the Hawthorne Theatre lounge for a night of foot tapping good times!
We started the intimate night off with an opening set by singer/songwriter James Hunnicutt and the acoustic glue of Jayke Orvis and the Broken Band! Hunnicutt’s positive, honest, and energetic spirit can be felt with every strum and lyric, harmonic sounding! Blasting out tunes such as “One Last Kiss”, “Risk the Fall”, “We’re Coming Back” and a few more, it’s easy to see Hunnicut has traveled many miles with his guitar on his back and it’s nice to see him settle down for a minute with Jayke Orvis and the Broken Band.
Primed and polished from last year’s run, a recently totaled van, and a brand new passenger bus, Jayke Orvis & the Broken Band signed to Farmeggeddon Records have been smoking cities throughout the country. Violinist Liz Sloan, Upright Bass Jared McGovern, Acoustic glue James Hunnicut, and mandolin – lead vocalist Jayke Orvis proceeded to show there is buzz of chemistry amongst the band.
Opening with tracks such as “Clankertown”, “Crooked Smile”, and “Shady Grove” and “Shot Down” the introduction was set and the call was made, it’s time to dance. As the band got warmed up and continued slaying other tunes like “Thunder Bolts and Lightning”, “Kaw-Liga” and the brilliant and dark “Dreadful Sinner“, the mixed crowd of black garb accelerated like an old school Chevy fueled on – thrashgrass!
Riding fast and living large with the simple things in tow seems to keep the band rolling right through the sets every night and “Feelings like this don’t End“. Closing the Portland night out with fan favorites “Raise the Moon”, “Lead Me Astray” and “Yankee Taste” which blew me away with a intro from Metallica’s “Battery”, left us completely charged for another round, ok maybe not but it was worth hoping for! You can catch Jayke Orvis & the Broken Band on tour right now cruising through the west coast (in their new bus) onward to the great Muddy Roots Festival (Nashville) and Muddy Roots Festival (Europe). Safe travels dudes, keep Rocking and we’ll catch you guys on the next go round!
