Greensky Bluegrass mainstage!

Another splendid time at this year’s 17th annual Northwest String Summit festival, held every year in July, at Horning’s Hideout in North Plains, Oregon! The festival featured many of the usual string summit trailblazers like Yonder Mountain String Band, Greensky Bluegrass, The Infamous Stringdusters, The Lil Smokies, Leftover Salmon and so many more great artists spreading their different blends of bluegrass. Now a smoothly run music festival held together by a hard-working crew of lifers and volunteers, the String Summit often doubles as a family reunion and this year was no different as smiles and hugs consistently filled the stage-packed-bowl for the 4 day festival!

Yonder Mountain String Band mainstage!

Decked with approximately seven stages scattered throughout the festival grounds, it’s hard to keep up and see everything. Thursday’s opening night closed with a three hour performance from Michigan’s, Greensky Bluegrass following a epic Railroad Earth set!  With the daily workshops beginning on Friday, picking circles ignited, and pizza smell hovering the festival grounds, the night closed with another crowd favoring set from YMSB. With a rich decade plus festival history, Saturday night always proves a special and memorable Strummit night for fans. This year featured YMSB taking on Steve Miller’s greatest hits 74-78 album in it’s entirety, followed by Leftover Salmon adding a brass section to close out the late night main stage funk set in grand Funkn style! Fun to see newcomers Mandolin Orange, Yak Attack and a few others bringing their own unique goods to the fold while fitting right in.

We saw a few changes this year like hosts, YMSB taking a step back from the main stage and playing a late Thursday night set from the secondary Kinfolk stage. Also in a 17 year first to my recollection, YMSB gave way to partners in grass, the Infamous Stringdusters, who closed the festival from the main stage on Sunday. To much delight, we even got the addition of tacos added to the always happening vendor row.

Of course it was hot, but that is par for the summer and we just grass with it! As always, another great festival full of exciting memories. Now, we’re already less than a year away from next year’s 18th annual String Summit. See you next year!
