The sirens you heard echoing in Portland, Oregon on October 30th were basically four minutes and twenty seconds of graceful feedback and composed distortion from the ending of an amazing EYEHATEGOD show at the Bossanova Ballroom. The band is currently on the road, touring for “The Flags and Cities Unbound Fall Tour” along with Power Trip, Iron Reagan and up-n-coming local city acts. Back together after a 14 year period of semi-hibernation during which its members played in other bands, witnessed a devastating hurricane, and simply grew through both the dark and the light, EYEHATEGOD is active once again and seems truly ignited by their new 2014 self-titled release “EYEHATEGOD” from Housecore Records!
Always consistent with their NOLA sludge-doom-southern rock sound, Mike IX Williams, Jimmy Bower, Aaron Hill, Brian Patton and Gary Mader are as current and potent as ever! Whether it was Mike IX Williams throwing out those destructive pellets of scorching vocals (even while seemingly “glazed” at times), or Jimmy Bower groove-riffing in his sandals and never skipping a beat, EYEHATEGOD sounded as raw and tight as expected. The performance unfolded in a simple manner with no backdrops or gimmicks, and the placement of drummer Aaron Hill in a close middle-row, side-turned position added a extra dab of interest and intimacy to the stage. The spacious venue, brightly and somewhat colorfully lit, turned metal sweaty in a hurry with the usual controlled chaos of like-minded heavy groove fans slapping high fives with the NOLA doom crew. Great show, especially when the band log says it’s over at 12am and yet they play on!!!
